Locations
The places you keep stock, what each is called in Tally, and how to rename one or add another from Settings.

What Locations is for
A location is a place you keep stock: a godown, a shop floor, a rack room. In Tally each one is a godown, and Tally keeps the count of what is in it. Orzoni reads the count from there.
Settings, then Locations, lists every one of them by the name it has in Tally. It is the place to rename a location, and one of two places to add one. To see what a location holds and what that is worth, use Stock, then Warehouses: see Warehouses and pack sizes. Orzoni calls the same place a warehouse there.
Open Locations
- Press Settings at the foot of the rail. On a phone, press More, then Settings.
Choose Locations.
The screen opens on Where you keep stock, with the mark Syncs with Tally: a name you change or a place you add here goes into your Tally books.
Locations is listed for everyone whose role includes See stock. Renaming and adding need Change stock. Without it the list can be read, and there is no pencil and no box for a new place. See Users and roles.
What the list shows
The line above the list says what a row is: Each row is one place you keep stock. Tally counts what is in it.
The column Name in Tally holds each place's name. Press a name to open that warehouse, with everything kept there. A small "i" beside the column's heading opens a short note on what the column is. Point at it, or tap it on a phone.
Under a name there may be a line of small print:
| Under the name | What it means |
|---|---|
| Inside Main Godown | The place is kept inside another, as a rack or a room is |
| Tally's own default place | This is Main Location, where Tally keeps stock when an entry names no other place |
| Waiting to go into Tally | You added it in Orzoni and Tally does not have it yet. Press the line to open it |
| Just added to Tally | Tally has taken it, and Orzoni has not read it back yet |
| Refused by Tally | Tally would not take the new place. Press the line to see why |
| Becoming Shop Floor, waiting for Tally | A new name is on its way into Tally. Press the line to open it |
| Renamed to Shop Floor in Tally | Tally has the new name. The list follows the next time Tally is read |
| Tally refused the name Shop Floor | Press the line to see why |
A company with godowns switched off in Tally keeps everything in one place. Until something is in stock, the list is empty and says Tally keeps everything in one place until more than one godown is switched on.
Where a Shopify store is connected, a second column, Name on Shopify, shows the store's location each place is linked to.
Rename a location
Press the pencil beside the name.
A small box opens, headed Rename and the name it has now.
- Type the new name.
Press Rename in Tally.
Orzoni says Renamed in Tally. Until the new name has been read back from Tally, the old name stays, with the new one in small print under it.
The place is renamed in Tally itself. Its stock and its entries stay with it, and every screen in Orzoni shows the new name once Tally has been read again.
What you make in Orzoni goes into Tally through the Tally connector, a small Windows app that sits beside Tally. If that computer or Tally is off, your work waits, the screen says so, and it goes in by itself when both are back. See When a bill is waiting or refused for the detail.
Where there is no pencil
- Main Location cannot be renamed from Orzoni. It is Tally's own name for the place stock is kept in when no other is named. Rename it in Tally.
- A place that is still waiting to go into Tally has no pencil until Tally has it.
- A place whose new name is on its way has no pencil until Tally has answered. If Tally refuses the name, the pencil comes back so you can try another.
If the box will not take the name
| The box says | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Shop Floor" is already a warehouse in Tally. | Choose a name no other place has |
| That is its name already. | Type a different name, or close the box |
| Enter the new name. | A name has at least two characters |
| A change to this warehouse is going into Tally right now. Try again in a moment. | Wait a few seconds and press again |
| This warehouse cannot be renamed from here yet. Check Tally now, then try again. | Press the round arrow at the foot of the rail to read Tally again, then rename |
Add a location
- In the box at the foot of the list, Name of a new place, type the name.
Press Add to Tally.
Orzoni says Added to Tally, and the place joins the list. It is a godown in Tally, and it starts empty.
To put stock in it, move some there: see Warehouses and pack sizes.
- If Tally already has a place of that name, the form says so and nothing is added.
- To keep the new place inside another, as a rack inside a godown, add it from Stock, Warehouses instead, where New warehouse has an Inside choice.
- There is no button to remove a place. A godown is deleted in Tally itself.
How it is checked
Every change is read back from Tally and compared with what was sent. If Tally refuses a rename, nothing is lost: the place keeps its old name, and the list says Tally refused the name with a line to open for the reason. Adding a godown has been run on a real TallyPrime 7.1.
What next
- Warehouses and pack sizes: what each place holds, bins, and moving stock between two of them.
- Items: where one item is kept.
- Settings and updates: the rest of Settings.
- When a bill is waiting or refused: what waits for Tally, and what to do when Tally says no.
