Billing apps for a business already on Tally: keep the books, change the billing

Vyapar, myBillBook, Zoho Books, Marg and Orzoni for a business that keeps its books in Tally: which replace it, which export to it, what each costs.

On this page

It is half past two on a Saturday at an electrical goods distributor in Nagpur, and the accountant has a week of bills to get into Tally. The counter makes them in a billing app, because the staff there find it quicker than Tally's voucher screen. She gets them as a file. Three customer names do not match her ledgers. Two bills were changed after Thursday. And the stock in Tally is a week behind the shelf, so the owner has stopped trusting either number.

The question behind that Saturday is a fair one: can we bill in something easier and keep the CA's Tally? Yes. But the well-known billing apps are complete sets of books, built so that a business can run without Tally, and where they link to Tally at all, it is by a file you export. Orzoni is built the other way round: it keeps no books of its own, and a bill made in it becomes an entry in Tally itself.

This post sets out what Vyapar, myBillBook, Zoho Books, Marg ERP and Orzoni each do for a business in that position, with every price read from the maker's own website on 11 October 2026.

The three jobs, and who keeps which record

Any software you bill in is doing up to three jobs.

The bill. A GST invoice for the customer in front of you: the right name and GSTIN, the items, HSN codes, the tax split by place of supply, a number in series.

The books. Ledgers, receivables and payables, the bank, the GST working papers, the trial balance your CA closes in March.

The stock. What the godown holds today, item by item, and what it is worth.

In Tally all three are one record. A sales voucher is the bill, it posts to the ledgers, and it takes the goods out of stock in the same stroke. That is why accountants trust it, and why a second program beside it is a bigger decision than it looks. The moment bills are made somewhere else, you have to ask of each job: which program is keeping this record now, and how does the other one find out?

A grid of five products against the bill, the books and the stock. Vyapar, myBillBook, Zoho Books and Marg ERP each keep all three in the app. With Orzoni the bill is made in Orzoni and the books and stock stay in Tally Bill Books Stock Kept in Vyapar the app the app the app To Tally: two XML files you import by hand myBillBook the app the app the app To Tally: an XML file by email, on request Zoho Books the app the app the app From Tally: a one-time move in, by files Marg ERP the app the app the app Tally: no link named where we looked Orzoni Orzoni Tally Tally To Tally: each bill sent in, then read back
Which program keeps each record, and how Tally hears about a bill

Replace Tally, sit beside it, or stay in step with it

There are three relationships a billing program can have with your Tally.

Replace it. You move the books into the new program and stop using Tally. For many small businesses this is the right answer, and nobody should be embarrassed to choose it. One program, one record, one bill a year. The cost is the move itself, and your CA's willingness to work in the new program.

Sit beside it, with a file. The counter bills in the app. Every week or month someone exports a file and imports it into Tally. In between, the app runs ahead of Tally. Stock sold at the counter is still in Tally's godown. A bill edited after the export is one thing in the app and another in the books. This is the Saturday in Nagpur.

Stay in step with it. The bill is made in the easier program and sent straight into Tally as an entry. There is no second set of books to reconcile, because there is no second set of books.

Two timelines over three months. With a file exported at month end, the bills that are in the app and not in Tally pile up until each export. With each bill sent as it is made, Tally has it within the minute A file at month end The app runs ahead of Tally until the file goes in Bills in the app that Tally has not got 30 April 31 May 30 June 1 April Each dark line is an export. Change a bill afterwards and it needs another export. Each bill as it is made Tally has it within the minute, with the computer on A bill, sent into Tally and read back 1 April 30 June Computer off: bills wait, and go in when it is back.
A file at month end, against each bill as it is made

The four established products below all work as the first relationship, and they are good at it. Two of them also offer the second. We built Orzoni for the third. Knowing which relationship you want narrows the choice faster than any feature list.

Vyapar

What it is. Vyapar describes itself as GST billing software "built for every Indian small business", covering billing, inventory, payments and accounting. Its site says it runs on Android, iOS, Windows and Mac with a cloud sync between them.

What it is good at. The counter, and the phone. Vyapar's site says the app is free to use on mobile for life, with a free trial on desktop. It also says you can create bills without internet, with the data saved on the device and synced to Vyapar's servers when you are back online. For a shop where the line drops twice a day, that matters more than anything else on this page. The site also lists e-invoices, e-way bills, barcodes, an online store, payment reminders on WhatsApp, and nine or more Indian languages.

Its plans, as published on its desktop page.

PlanListed priceOf note
Silver₹3,799 a year3 firms
Gold₹4,099 a year5 firms, sync across devices, e-way bills and e-invoices
Retail Pro₹8,999 a yearImport and export of data with Tally, accountant access
Platinum₹9,999 a yearListed on its own page

The pages do not say whether GST is included. A 7-day trial is offered on desktop.

How it meets Tally. By files. Retail Pro lists "Import/Export Data (Tally)". Vyapar's own guide describes the export: in the Utility section, choose Export to Tally, set the period, and Vyapar writes two files, one of masters and one of vouchers, covering sales, credit notes, purchases and debit notes. You then import them through Tally's import screen, masters first. In the other direction, Vyapar's site presents bringing Tally data in as a way of "helping businesses switch to Vyapar without losing records".

The pages we read do not describe a continuing link in which a bill reaches Tally by itself.

Who it suits. A retailer or small trader who wants billing on a phone that keeps working offline, and who is either leaving Tally or content to hand the CA a file each month.

myBillBook

What it is. myBillBook says it is "built for small businesses in India that need billing, invoicing, inventory management, payment tracking, and GST compliance" in one place. It runs on Android, iOS, the web and, from the Pro plan, a desktop app.

What it is good at. A lot of shop-floor detail for the money. Its site lists quotations, purchase orders, POS billing, low-stock alerts, batch tracking and expiry management. Every plan carries a seat for your CA alongside your own. And its plans are among the lowest-priced here.

Its plans, as published.

PlanListed priceOf note
Plus₹3,490 a year1 business, 1 user and 1 CA; Android, iOS and web; online store
Pro₹3,990 a yearAdds the desktop app and unlimited godowns
Pro MaxFrom ₹570 a month, billed yearly2 businesses, 3 users and 1 CA; e-invoices, e-way bills, POS billing, data export to Tally

The page shows a 7-day money-back guarantee on all plans. It does not say whether GST is included.

How it meets Tally. By a file, on request. The pricing page lists "Data Export to tally (on request)" under Pro Max. myBillBook's feature page explains it: in Settings, under Manage Business, you choose a date range and enter your email address and your CA's, and a Tally XML file is sent by email. It covers parties, items, sales and purchases. The page is candid about the limits: the file is made when you ask and not continuously, the date range is limited, repeated requests may be limited, and the data "should be reviewed after importing into Tally". A bill changed after the export needs a fresh export.

That candour is to their credit. It tells you exactly what you are getting: a clean hand-over to the accountant at the times you choose.

Who it suits. A shop or small distributor that wants billing, stock and an online catalogue in one app at a low yearly price, with the CA either working inside myBillBook on the seat provided, or taking a file for Tally at intervals.

Zoho Books

What it is. A full accounting system in the cloud. Zoho describes managing "end-to-end accounting", and the feature list bears that out: invoices, bills and expenses, bank feeds and reconciliation, inventory tracking, customer and vendor portals, e-invoices, e-way bills, GST reports and filing of returns, with mobile and desktop apps.

What it is good at. Being the books. Its plans go deep on accounting itself: period locking, approvals, multi-currency, budgets, fixed assets and payroll as you go up the plans, and GST returns filed from inside it. It has a free plan for a business whose revenue stays under ₹25 lakh a year, with one user and one accountant. If you have decided to move your books to the cloud, this is a serious candidate and a different kind of product from a billing app.

Its plans, as published for India. Prices are per organisation per month and, in Zoho's words, "exclusive of local taxes".

PlanMonthly, or billed yearlyUsers
Free₹01 and an accountant
Standard₹899, or ₹7493
Professional₹1,799, or ₹1,4995
Premium₹3,599, or ₹2,99910
Elite₹5,999, or ₹4,99915
Ultimate₹9,599, or ₹7,99925

A 14-day trial is offered.

How it meets Tally. As the place you move to. Zoho publishes a guide for migrating from Tally: you export a stock summary, master data, voucher data and a trial balance from Tally, and import them into Zoho Books up to a migration date. The pricing page names no link with Tally, and we found no continuing sync between Zoho Books and Tally described on Zoho's site. Zoho's site does list a connector between Zoho Inventory, a different product, and Tally, made by a partner firm; we have not looked at it for this post.

Who it suits. A business ready to change where the books are kept, with a CA who is comfortable in Zoho Books or willing to be. It suits a business that is leaving Tally more than one that is keeping it.

Marg ERP

What it is. Marg describes itself as "business management software for retailers, distributors, pharma, and FMCG businesses", and says it has been building billing and accounting software since 1992.

What it is good at. Depth in its trades. For a chemist or a pharma distributor, Marg's site lists batch-wise stock, expiry management, salt and substitute information, and schemes. It lists GST billing, e-invoices, e-way bills and return filing, bank reconciliation, multi-branch working, and a family of mobile apps. Its site also describes ordering between connected ERP systems, which counts for a lot in a trade where your suppliers run it too.

Its plans, as published.

EditionListed priceUsers
Nano₹5,550Up to 2, and up to 2 companies
Basic₹10,3001 with full rights, up to 2
Silver₹13,9001 with full rights, 1 view only
Gold₹26,000Unlimited

Each is "18% GST Extra". The page states no period beside the prices, so ask whether a figure is for a year or for the licence. It also says "Final Prices vary on customer requirements and implementation basis", that customisation is extra, and that Marg does not sell through online portals.

How it meets Tally. Marg's home and pricing pages name no link with Tally. Marg is a complete system with its own accounts, so it is a choice in place of Tally more than one beside it.

Who it suits. Pharma, FMCG and distribution businesses that want trade-specific workflows and are choosing a system to run everything in. If your stock is kept by batch and expiry, look here before you look at us: Orzoni does not bill goods that Tally keeps by batch.

Orzoni

Orzoni is our product. Hold this section to the same standard as the others.

What it is. Cloud software for the daily running of a business, opened in a browser or on a phone: invoices and bills, payments, stock, GST working papers, customers and suppliers, analytics, tasks and follow-ups, team attendance and pay. It is joined to TallyPrime through a small Windows program, the Tally connector, on the computer that runs Tally. Orzoni does not keep books without Tally.

How it meets Tally. A bill made in Orzoni is sent into Tally as a real sales voucher, numbered by Tally, and then read back to check that it landed as sent. With the Tally computer on, that is within the minute. The connector also reads Tally every minute, so an entry your accountant makes in Tally shows in Orzoni soon after. After every read, six of Orzoni's figures are set against Tally's own.

A new sales invoice in Orzoni for the sample company Meridian Electricals: the customer Anand Electricals, six ceiling fans at ₹1,925, CGST and SGST of 9% each, a bill total of ₹13,629.00 paid into HDFC Bank, and the button Send to Tally

The check against Tally in Orzoni for the sample company: six of six agree, with 61 of 61 ledger balances, 22 of 22 stock quantities, stock value within a paisa, net profit equal to Tally's, and 206 unpaid bills matching

Stock is Tally's stock. The item you pick on a bill is the Tally stock item, with its HSN code and GST rate, and the bill shows how many are in hand. Sell six fans at the counter and Tally's godown is six lower, because the sale is in Tally.

The list of invoices in Orzoni for the sample company: ₹1,85,85,796.34 billed on 889 invoices this financial year, ₹39,95,050.24 unpaid and ₹18,92,038.66 overdue, each invoice with Tally's own number

What it is good at. Letting the counter, the owner's phone and the accountant's Tally be one record. Billing staff get a short form instead of a voucher screen, and can be kept from seeing profit, cash or ledgers. The accountant changes nothing about how she works. Nobody exports anything on Saturday.

What it does not do. Read this list as carefully as the last paragraph.

  • It needs the Tally computer on. That computer has to be on and online with the company open for a bill to land. When it is off, Orzoni shows the books as they last stood and the bill waits. It goes in by itself when the computer is back.
  • It does not bill without a connection. Nothing can be made on a phone with no signal. If your counter must bill through a dead line, Vyapar's offline billing is the better fit.
  • E-invoices and e-way bills are made in Tally, not in Orzoni. It is not a GST filing tool: its GST screens are working papers for your accountant.
  • No payment links, bank feeds or emailed bills. A bill is shared by WhatsApp, print or PDF.
  • One print layout, which follows Tally's tax invoice and carries your address, bank details, terms and signatory, and no logo.
  • Not for goods kept by batch, and not for a company registered for GST in more than one state.
  • Windows only at the office end. The connector runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Orzoni is built for TallyPrime and proven on release 7.1.

The whole list is in what Orzoni leaves to Tally.

Its plans. ₹999 a month for one company, ₹2,499 for up to three, priced by companies and not by people. Billing has not opened, so nothing is charged today; the pricing page will say so before that changes. You also need your own TallyPrime licence.

Who it suits. A business that is staying on Tally, with a CA who wants it that way, and a counter or an owner who wants to bill from somewhere other than Tally's keyboard.

Listed prices for one business over a year

Orzoni is the dearest on this table, and that deserves a straight explanation instead of a clever one. The others are priced to be the only software you buy. Orzoni is bought on top of Tally.

So work the year out for the business you are, one that keeps Tally. Suppose a Silver licence with TSS renewed at ₹5,310 a year including GST.

What you runThe sumA year
Tally aloneTSS₹5,310
Tally and myBillBook Pro Max₹5,310 + ₹6,840₹12,150
Tally and Vyapar Retail Pro₹5,310 + ₹8,999₹14,309
Tally and Orzoni₹5,310 + ₹11,988₹17,298

We have used the plan on which each maker lists its Tally export, and assumed you renew TSS.

The row that the table cannot show is the Saturday. Take our distributor: 140 bills a week, and an accountant who spends three hours each Saturday exporting, importing, fixing names and chasing the two bills that changed. That is 150 hours over fifty weeks. At a salary of ₹25,000 a month, which is about ₹120 an hour over 26 days of eight hours, it comes to ₹18,000 a year. This is our own worked example, not a statistic, and your hours will differ. But put your own number in before you compare the last two rows, because the export is not free just because the file is.

And if you are willing to leave Tally, the sum changes completely: the entry plan of any of the four, on its own, costs less than Tally and a second program together.

Who each one suits

Who each product suits: Vyapar for a counter billing on a phone without internet, myBillBook for a shop wanting billing, an online store and a seat for the CA, Zoho Books for moving the books to the cloud, Marg ERP for chemists and distributors, Orzoni for a business staying on Tally If this is you, look first at A counter that must keep billing on a phone when the internet is down Vyapar A shop that wants billing, an online store and a seat for the CA in one app myBillBook Ready to move the books themselves to the cloud, GST returns included Zoho Books A chemist or distributor who lives by batches and expiry dates Marg ERP Staying on Tally, and want bills made on a phone to land in it Orzoni
Start from your own situation

A simpler way to say it: decide about Tally first. If Tally is going, compare Vyapar, myBillBook, Zoho Books and Marg on their merits for your trade, and leave us out. If Tally is staying, the question becomes how a bill gets into it, and there the choice is a file or an entry.

What to test in a trial

Whichever product you try, do these four things with one real bill before you decide. They take twenty minutes and they show you what a brochure cannot.

  1. Make one bill to a registered customer in another state, with two items at different GST rates. Check the GSTIN, the HSN codes and the IGST.
  2. Find it in Tally. How did it get there, who had to do something, and how long after? Open the voucher. Is the party the ledger your accountant uses, or a new one with a slightly different name? Did the stock go down in the right godown?
  3. Change it. Add a line to the bill in the billing program. Does Tally follow, or do you now have two versions?
  4. Cancel it. Then look at Tally again, and at the stock.

With a file-based link, steps 3 and 4 are where the two records part. Ask the vendor what the routine is.

In Orzoni, a changed or cancelled bill is changed or cancelled in Tally itself, and anything Tally refuses is shown with Tally's reason and the choices Change it, Try again and Discard. Do the test in a test company first, not in your live books. The guides for it are make a sales invoice, invoices, bills and payments and how Orzoni stays in step with Tally. What Orzoni is and is not is set out in what Orzoni does.

FAQ

Can I use Vyapar or myBillBook and still keep Tally?

Yes, with a file. Vyapar lists import and export of data with Tally on its Retail Pro plan, and myBillBook lists data export to Tally, on request, on Pro Max. In both, someone exports for a period and imports the file into Tally. Between exports the two will differ.

Does Zoho Books sync with Tally?

Zoho's India pricing page names no link with Tally, and we found none described for Zoho Books on Zoho's site. Zoho publishes a guide for migrating from Tally into Zoho Books, which is a one-time move.

Is Orzoni a replacement for Tally?

No. Orzoni does not keep books without Tally. Your books stay in TallyPrime, and Orzoni reads them and sends your bills into them.

Which is cheapest?

On listed price, Zoho Books' free plan for a business under ₹25 lakh of revenue, then myBillBook Plus at ₹3,490 a year and Vyapar Silver at ₹3,799. If you are keeping Tally as well, add Tally's yearly cost to whichever you choose.

My CA insists on Tally. What should I tell the counter staff?

That they can stop using Tally's voucher screen without the books leaving Tally. Either they bill in an app and the CA takes a file, or they bill in Orzoni and the bill is already in Tally. Run the four-step test above with the CA in the room.

One thing to do today

Ask your accountant how many hours last month went on getting bills from wherever they are made into Tally, and how many bills had to be corrected afterwards. That number decides more than any price here.

Try the bill and stock flow in a test company first. Make one bill in Orzoni and open Tally to find it.
